Searching
You don't need an account to search, and the site sets no cookies when you do. Your searches go to the site's server to be answered; the server doesn't record them. To limit how fast any one address can make requests, it counts each address's requests over the last minute, in memory, and then forgets them.
Kept in your browser
Your browser keeps your choices (the edition, state, building type and the Plumbing Code switch), your "This is the one" answers, and, if you're signed in, kept AI answers and their timings, in its own storage on your device. When the page loads, it sends the searches your "This is the one" answers belong to, so they are filed the same way as before: the server answers and keeps nothing.
Signed-in accounts
Signing in sets one cookie, which keeps you signed in for seven days; it is used for nothing else. To protect the accounts, the server records each sign-in attempt: the time, the account name tried, the address it came from, and whether it worked. For each AI question it records the account, the time, the question, and the tokens and cost.
An AI question goes to Anthropic, which provides the AI model: the question, and the text of the NCC and legislation provisions the site found for it, so the model can answer. Nothing else about you is sent with it. Anthropic handles it under its commercial terms.
Where it is kept
The site runs on DigitalOcean's App Platform, in Sydney. The server's records go to the host's logs, which it keeps only for a short time. The hosting provider's network may keep its own short-term records of requests.
